The name derives from Shah Bihari, a Muslim governor, whose Hindu protégés took his name as their own — a testament to the intimate, complex relationship between Sindh's Hindu and Muslim communities. Their Bathija nukh carries its own etymology: possibly from bhathiyaro (oven-keeper or inn-keeper), suggesting an earlier occupational identity. By the 19th and early 20th century, however, the Shahanis had risen to the highest levels of Amil society — producing intellectuals, school principals, legislators, and magistrates. Multiple ghittis (neighbourhood clusters) in Hyderabad bore their name.
