Mahbubani

The Mahbubanis carry one of Sindhi culture's most revealing names — Mahbub, the Arabic-Persian word for "beloved" or "dear one." That a Hindu Sindhi family carried an Arabic name as their founding ancestor's identity is not unusual — it is quintessentially Sindhi. For over a thousand years, the Hindu and Muslim communities of Sindh shared language, poetry, architecture, and even names. The -ani suffix then marks "of Mahbub's lineage." The name gained global intellectual prominence through Kishore Mahbubani, the Singaporean diplomat and scholar who was born to Sindhi Hindu parents and became one of Asia's most influential public thinkers.
