The story of the Lohana surname

The Lohana community occupies a unique place in Sindh's history — simultaneously a "tribe" in the Gazetteer's classification and the dominant Hindu mercantile caste that produced both the Amil (administrative) and Bhaiband (trading) sub-communities. Scholars trace their origins to the mixed Scythian–Rajput–Jat stock that settled in Sindh in the first millennium CE, gradually transitioning from warrior-peasantry to merchants and administrators. Their ancestral capital is Aror (near modern Rohri) — an ancient city on the Indus that was once the seat of Sindhi power. From Aror they spread through eastern Sindh and into the Kutch–Gujarat corridor, establishing the global trading network that still characterises the Sindhi diaspora today.
